With its striker Harry Kane, FC Bayern Munich took part in the final training for the Champions League duel at Aston Villa on Wednesday (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). The 31-year-old Englishman had to be substituted after hitting his left ankle after a kick in the 1-1 draw in the top Bundesliga game against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. During the first 15 minutes of Munich’s training session, which was open to the media, Kane took part in the game without any visible restrictions.
“He scored in training, it looks good,” said sports director Max Eberl with a laugh before the Munich team departed for Birmingham. “He’s definitely there.” But he is not a doctor, with Kane you have to wait until the night. “It feels really good right now.”
Kane, Tottenham Hotspur’s long-time figurehead, had previously said: “Whenever I go back to the UK, I’m happy to play there.” And further: “Of course it will be a great atmosphere because it is the first home game for them in the Champions League in a long, long time.”
FC Bayern has parted ways with chief scout Markus Pilawa and announced a successor. The record champions agreed to end their collaboration with Pilawa, who came from Dortmund in the summer of 2022. His successor will be Nils Schmadtke, who will officially receive the title of “Head of Scouting” department.
The 35-year-old, who is the son of the well-known football manager Jörg Schmadtke, already has many years of experience as a scout, three of them in Cologne (2016 to 2019) and one in Mönchengladbach (2019 to 2020). He also headed the scouting department at VfL Wolfsburg for three years (2020 to 2023). Last season he worked as sports director at Borussia Mönchengladbach, but left the “Foals” in the summer.

With Sacha Boey, Hiroki Itō, Manuel Neuer and Josip Stanišić, FC Bayern are missing four important players before the top Bundesliga game against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. While Neuer could return to goal, Stanišić definitely won’t be available. The full-back with a Leverkusen past suffered a torn outer ligament in his knee.
Michael Reschke, former technical director in Munich, sees this as a problem: “The loss has a serious impact on Bayern, no question at all, especially since Boey, his alternative squad, was also injured,” he said in an interview with “Sport1”. Stanišić was reliable and confident in his position during the championship season in Leverkusen, showed game-winning actions and: “He’s also a really great boy.”
According to Reschke, it was a “trend-setting and logical vote of confidence from Max Eberl (Bayern’s sports director, editor’s note) not to sign a new player after his injury,” the 66-year-old continued.
President Herbert Hainer of FC Bayern has once again assured national player Jamal Musiala of the German record champions’ boundless appreciation and described the 21-year-old as the “footballer of the century”. He had to emphasize “that we love our Jamal more than anything,” Hainer told the Abendzeitung (weekend edition) and added: “Our first aim is of course to tie him to FC Bayern in the long term.”
According to reports, there have already been initial discussions about extending the offensive player’s contract beyond 2026. It is an open secret that Bayern would also like to sign Musiala’s DFB friend Florian Wirtz from double winner Bayer Leverkusen. “Everyone knows that Florian Wirtz is a really, really good footballer,” said Hainer: “But I won’t comment any further about a Leverkusen player.”
