The Telekom Baskets Bonn started the new FIBA season with a defeat basketball Champions League started. The 2023 Champions League winner had to admit defeat to the Latvian first division club VEF Riga 72:86 (42:41) due to a weak final quarter.
The Bonn team started nervously with five ball losses in the first five minutes. Thanks to their bench players, the guests found their rhythm and were ahead 21:19 at the end of the quarter after a trick shot by Darius McGhee. In the second round, the guests were up to seven points ahead, but were defeated Riga Sharpshooter Dairis Bertans (22 points in the first half) couldn’t get a grip. Weak fourth quarter seals defeat
At the beginning of the second half, Bonn had to accept a 0:9 run. Thanks to a few three-pointers, they found their way back into the game and maintained a one-point lead before the final period.
In the middle of the fourth round, the guests didn’t score for four minutes, meaning the hosts were ahead by double digits (78:68). Bonn Top scorer McGhee scored nine of his 25 points in the fourth round, but was too much on his own on offense. With 13:28 the final period was clearly lost for Bonn.
