A traditional Berlin bakery is closing: After 125 years, the Mälzer bakery is over. What’s behind the end of the well-known family bakery?
After 125 years, it’s finally over: The traditional Berlin bakery Mälzer in Berlin closed its doors forever at the end of September. Five branches in Steglitz, Wilmersdorf and Schöneberg as well as several market stalls in the west of the city could no longer withstand the economic pressure.
Insolvency proceedings were opened in the summer in the hope of saving the company. But the efforts were unsuccessful. With a note on the last remaining branch on Steglitzer Ahornstrasse and an announcement on its own website, the operating family thanked their customers “with a heavy heart” for their years of loyalty. The reasons given for the closure include increased raw material and energy costs as well as a shortage of personnel.
According to the “Morgenpost”, the history of the bakery goes back to 1899, when the “First Rhineland Bakery” was founded in Berlin. The small shop on Ahornstrasse in Steglitz had been a permanent institution since 1915.
Many customers mourn the loss of the traditional company on social media.
