FC Augsburg remains unbeaten in the second half of the season. Nevertheless, the “Fuggerstadt” are annoyed after the draw against Hoffenheim. The reason: a controversial penalty.
The frustration was deep at FC Augsburg. Despite the club records of eleven games in a row without defeat, the 1-1 draw in Hoffenheim was a minor matter-the focus was rather on a decision by referee Tobias Reichel.
Augsburg’s defense chief Jeffrey Gouweleeuw was hard to stop after the final whistle. “What should I do?” He asked with a red head and shot about Reichel on the broadcaster Sky: “I don’t know what was going on in his head. It just doesn’t work.”
The trigger for the anger: a penalty imposed by Reichel for TSG Hoffenheim in the 71st minute. Andrej Kramarić safely converted and ended the series of 683 minutes without conceding FCA goalkeeper Finn Dahmen.
Reichel’s decision for a penalty was again extremely controversial because Gouweleeuw had received a deflected ball from a short distance – a reaction was not possible.
After the game, Augsburg coach Jess Thorup emphasized that Reichel should have “looked at” with the help of the video assistant. “Then he will see that it is not a penalty,” said the Dane.
After all: Reichel rightly took back another penalty for Hoffenheim in the 85th minute after a Var note-otherwise the resentment on the Augsburg side would be finally escalated.
In addition, at the FCA you should at least be happy about the goal of Samuel Dining. The striker had been substituted at halftime and had just stood in the field for 15 seconds when he achieved the meantime.
