From October, a special symbol will be mandatory on winter and all-season tires. If this sign is missing, you could face a heavy fine.
Many winter and all-season tires are now probably obsolete. Because from October 1, 2024, a new regulation will apply. It obliges drivers to use tires with a special Alpine symbol – a mountain with a snowflake. Until now, winter tires were identified by the embossing “M+S” (for mud and snow). This labeling alone will no longer be sufficient from the coming winter. Corresponding tires must be replaced.
The change affects all winter and all-season tires produced from 2018. Anyone who drives with M+S tires after the deadline despite the new regulation risks a fine. The catalog stipulates 60 euros and one point in Flensburg for the wrong tires. Obstruction of other road users is punished with 80 euros and endangerment with 100 euros. In the event of an accident, the fine increases to 120 euros and an additional point in Flensburg. The rules can be even stricter abroad.
Anyone who drives on tires that were manufactured before 2018 should also consider replacing them due to their age.
Important for drivers who have to dispose of their old tires: The costs vary and are usually between two and ten euros per tire at recycling and recycling centers. Some tire dealers offer free disposal when new tires are purchased at the same time.
