Isidra Torres, marathon athlete, has died from injuries caused by an attack by three pit bull dogs. After the death of the 52-year-old athlete, the Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office reported that it reclassified the crime to negligent homicide this weekend. According to investigations, the attack by the dogs whose owner is a neighbor of the athlete Torres, occurred last Sunday when Isidra Torres was walking down the street.
The attack by the dogs on the Mexican woman caused various injuries to different parts of her body, so she had to be transferred and admitted to the Dr. Aurelio Valdivieso Hospital in the Oaxacan capital to receive medical attention. Isidra’s daughter, Isis Guadalupe Zárate Torres, reported this Monday that the owner of the dogs, after the attack, hid on land he owned and did not help the athlete after what happened, according to the local media First Line.
«He left my mother lying and she didn’t even help me help her,” said Zárate. «My mother was struggling in the hospital for 28 days. There has been no arrest when we know that there is someone responsible here and the man has ignored it… he didn’t even come over to see how my mother is,” the daughter adds indignantly.
Outrage in the family of Isidra Torres
The athlete, who ran marathons for more than 10 years, received several bites on her body from the dogs that caused serious injuries, leading to the amputation of both of her arms. Isidra’s daughter added that given the inaction of the authorities, The owner of the dogs continued walking them on the street in the days following the attack on his mother.
The Prosecutor’s Office reported that it requested an arrest warrant against the owner of the dogs that attacked the athlete. However, he noted that “the judge hearing the case denied the issuance of said court order, so the Prosecutor’s Office requested a court date so that the case would not go unpunished.
This action by the judge has upset the family and friends of the athlete, very loved by the community of athletes in the region, since so far the authorities have not arrested the person responsible for the dogs. Because of this, on Monday a large group of people protested in the Oaxaca main square with banners such as “I raise my voice for Isi,” “I want to go running without fear,” and “We demand that the law be applied to those responsible.”
Given the great shock and pain that the runner’s death has caused, several athletics groups, family members and even sports journalists remember her with affection. «You loved to runhow you love certain things, secretly at dawn, with your soul. We regret the sensitive death of our kilometer-long sister Isidra Torres Hernández,” wrote the Imparables Runners group on Facebook.
For his part, sports journalist Julio León remembers the athlete as an enthusiastic and happy woman. «Isidra was always characterized in the athletic world by that enormous enthusiasm and joy; always cordial and expressing his excitement for each of the participations he faced in the different athletics.
