After arson: One child still in intensive care

After the devastating arson in Essen at the weekend, a child remains in intensive care. A 41-year-old perpetrator was arrested and investigations are ongoing.

After the two serious arsons with many injuries at the weekend in Essen, a child is still being treated in the intensive care unit. The investigators did not provide any further information about the condition of the victims, citing the protection of personal rights. Immediately after the crime on Saturday, the emergency services said that two small children were in mortal danger. The children inhaled smoke from the fire, which damaged their lungs.

According to the investigation, a 41-year-old armed with a machete set two apartment buildings on fire and then drove a delivery truck into two grocery stores. He was arrested.

The alleged perpetrator is now in custody for aggravated arson and attempted murder. After the crime, the police reported that the man probably wanted to use the fires to kill people who had supported his ex-wife. North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) said the man may not have been able to cope with the separation from her.

In total, the police now speak of 35 injuries as a result of the crime. So far there have been reports of 31 injuries. The two apartment buildings are still uninhabitable. At the same time, the police appealed to witnesses of the attack to contact investigators and help clarify the matter.
