A century ago, the evolution of the car found an obstacle on the road: the highways of the time could not support high speed driving. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) faces a similar challenge. Discover how BT and Google Cloud are collaborating to remove the brake from their customers’ plans.

When I talk to BT multinational clients, everyone agrees that the end of the inherited networks has arrived. Like the drivers of 100 years ago, they realize that “going slow” is the same as “being out of service.”

The invention of the car was a transformation. The mass production of affordable cars expanded the horizons of the people and generated new business opportunities. As Carl Benz’s “motorwagen” evolved towards modern cars, his performance exceeded the capacity of roads to support them. In order for the car to reach its true potential, it was necessary to create a new infrastructure. The highways, the interstate and the highways became the backbone of the transport of the modern world.

Today a similar story is being written, but instead of transporting physical objects such as you or me, it is about moving AI work loads in the digital world – from locations such as Google Cloud data centers to users and devices, are where they are.

Most companies continue to use networks designed for an earlier generation of technology, in which users worked in offices and accessed applications and data stored in their own data centers. The traffic was predictable and the connectivity was defined at the beginning of a fixed contract. There were hardly any changes, and those that were needed could take days or even weeks to apply.

AI has changed that. The traffic generated by AI is unpredictable. For example, training large -sized language models (LLM) can cause peaks in bandwidth demand, saturating inflexible networks. This affects not only the performance of AI, but also that of other applications. In addition, AI workloads may be distributed among many users in different locations, and the application itself can be housed in multiple clouds.

Our collaboration will also allow BT to offer customers the Google Cloud Partner Interconnect service through Global Fabric in 50 of the world’s main cloud locations, expanding to 70 by 2026. This will provide instantaneous connectivity with Google Cloud, with a service level agreement (SLA) of reliability of 99.99 %, backed both by BT and by Google Cloud.

BT will continue to strengthen its collaboration with Google Cloud to ensure reliable, direct and with the least possible latency to Google and Google Cloud services through its network.
