At least 7 people were killed and 11 injured in an attack in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, authorities confirmed.
Two armed men opened fire and began throwing knives inside a light train in the Jaffa area and exited it to continue shooting and stabbing when they arrived at the station, according to the Israeli police in a statement.
The attackers were “neutralized” by members of the public who witnessed the action, police said.
According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretzat least one of the attackers was killed by a passerby and a security guard. Police told local media that both suspects died.
Police said the attack had a “terrorist” motive and they are looking for other people who may be connected to the incident.
It occurred shortly before the anti-bombing sirens sounded in the city due to the launch of Iranian missiles against Israel and while troops from this country are immersed in a war in Gaza against the Palestinian organization Hamas and increasing armed actions against the Lebanese Hezbollah.
Images circulating on social media showed bodies lying on the ground and a witness told the Jerusalem Post that “there were many shots. We threw ourselves on the ground and people screamed. “I saw someone bleeding on the floor.”
A local merchant said he quickly lowered the blinds of his business when he saw “lots of people running and shouting ‘terrorist attack’.”
According to Haaretzthe attackers are two twenty-somethings from the city of Hebron, in the West Bank, and without permission to be in Israel.
According to local media, both attackers had left a nearby mosque.
Police and military officers searched it and detained some of those present for their possible relationship with the attack.
A large security operation was deployed in the area until the authorities ruled out any further threats.
In response to the attack, the Israeli army established a blockade around the city of Hebron.
Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir noted that “if it turns out that there is a connection to the mosque, the message is clear; It must be closed and demolished.”
