There are still a few counterpowers in the United States of Donald Trump. A Federal Judge of Boston prevented the administration of the American president on Monday from revoking the legal status of 532,000 Cuban, Haitians, Venezuelans, Nicaraguans and Cuban immigrants.
The decision of judge Indira Talwani is the last order to date against Donald Trump’s will to quickly carry out massive expulsions targeting, in particular, the Latin American. The Trump administration announced at the end of March the end of a special program, set up in 2023 by the government of Joe Biden, which allowed Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans to stay in the United States for two years due to the human rights situation in their countries.
An erroneous interpretation of the law
This regime allowed some 532,000 migrants to enter the country, up to a maximum of 30,000 per month. Judge Talwani ordered the emergency suspension of the abolition of the program. She considered that the government had acted on the basis of an erroneous interpretation of the law, the accelerated expulsion procedure applying to non-citizens who illegally entered the United States, but not to those who legally stay there under government programs.
Without this suspension, migrants who entered the United States under this program should have left the country by April 24, 30 days after the promulgation of the decree ending it. During his electoral campaign, President Donald Trump had promised to expel “millions” of undocumented immigrants.
