Rai supervision, the majority still deserts the session. New postponement

The centre-right parliamentarians are again deserting the session of the Rai Supervisory Commission called this morning, at 08.30, for the ratification vote on the presidency of Simona Agnes. The session was suspended by president Barbara Floridia and the lack of a quorum was verified. The meeting was therefore postponed but at the moment there is no reconvening date.

Only opposition parliamentarians Stefano Graziano for the Democratic Party, Dolores Bevilacqua for the M5S and Maria Elena Boschi for Italia Viva were present.

Pd, Graziano: “Damage to public service”

“The majority continues to sabotage the Rai Supervisory Commission by deserting the sessions and blocking the institutional process of appointing the president of the Board of Directors. It is an irresponsible act and of total contempt towards the rules and towards the citizens who pay the license fee, to whom the Rai should guarantee an independent and transparent public service”. Thus in a note Stefano Graziano, leader of the PD group in the Supervision commission, who asked the commission offices to immediately convene a bureau to note that there are no conditions to complete the vote on the Rai Presidency required by law.

“It is unacceptable – continues the Democratic MP – that, in order to escape confrontation, the majority chooses to paralyze one of the main control institutions of our radio and television system. And without the favorable opinion of the qualified majority commission, required by law, any appointment remains ineffective. But instead of respecting the rules, they prefer to block everything and compromise the role of the Supervisory Authority.”

“This irresponsible attitude – he concludes – not only undermines the transparency and effectiveness of the public service, but represents an attack on parliamentary democracy. We will not allow the Commission to become the battlefield for power games and bargaining: Supervision is and must remain independent, to protect the institutions and citizens”.
