Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s sets of films are always in the discussion due to their grandeur and cost. The sets of many big films of South are also being prepared at a cost of crores. SS Rajamouli’s set of ‘Bahubali’ was also quite grand and expensive, but the construction of expensive and grand sets has been going on since the rise of Indian cinema. When ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ was being made about 65 years ago, Sheesh Mahal was built at a cost of millions of rupees for shooting only one song. Let’s know about the story of the construction of this palace and its boom in that era.

It was time to build Sheesh Mahal

The ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ released in 1960 took 14 years to build. It took two years to become a set of a song from the film. The song was ‘Jab Pyaar Kiya Darna Kya’. When actress Madhubala dances in the song, she is seen in all the heads in the palace, but it was not easy to film. At one time it was almost impossible to create this scene. Experts were also called from Hollywood, but they also refused. The matter reached the demolition of Sheesh Mahal, built for Rs 15 lakh, but then cinematographer RD Mathur took a solution. As soon as the camera was installed, its light would fall on the glass. Reflectors were installed to stop this, but when the lights fell on them, the eyes would go dazzled and the shooting would become difficult. Mathur found a corner on the set with his camera, where the light was jumping. No reflection was coming from there. Then Madhubala was seen roaming in colorful glasses in the disguise of Anarkali and became the iconic scene of Hindi cinema.

The film was made for Rs 1.5 crore

When Rs 15 lakh was spent to prepare a song set, it is natural that the budget of the film must have been in crores. The film was one of the most expensive films of Bollywood. Whatever clothes the actors in the film wore were stitched in Delhi and engraved in Surat. Jewelry in Hyderabad, weapons in Rajasthan and shoes were made in Agra. The film used 2000 camels and 4000 horses. Due to all this, the budget of the film had reached Rs 1.5 crore.

The most expensive song of the film

The most expensive song from the film ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ is ‘Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya’. This song was not only a film but also the most expensive song in that era. The song was written 105 times before getting the approval. At that time there was no mixing facility, so Naushad recorded it in the washroom of the studio with Lata Mangeshkar to resonate in the song.
